No. 2 Maryland Storms Past No. 15 New Hampshire
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 2 Maryland amassed 49 shots on its way to a 20-6 thrashing of No. 15 New Hampshire Saturday at a wet Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
Maryland (6-0, 2-0 ACC) outshot the Wildcats 49-15 and forced UNH into 22 turnovers in the match. Tewaaraton nominees Karri Ellen Johnson and Sarah Mollison led the offensive explosion with four goals apiece as a total of 10 Terps notched scores on the day.
The Terps started the match with four unanswered goals, including two by Johnson. UNH's Shauna Kaplan scored at 18:01 to briefly stop Maryland's attack, but the Terps rallied for another three scores, including a pair by Mollison, to take a commanding 7-1 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
After both squads exchanged goals to push the game to 9-3, Maryland ended the first stanza with three unanswered goals in the final 1:20 for a nine-goal cushion at the half.
A Mollison score with 13 seconds elapsed in the second half pushed the score to 13-3 and allowed the clock to run for the remainder of the contest. Maryland outscored UNH 8-3 in the second half, highlighted by a pair of goals from freshman Sarah Matz.
Defensively, Maryland held its opponent to single-digit scores for the sixth consecutive time in 2010. Brittany Poist picked up a game-high four groundballs and added a pair of caused turnovers. Amanda Spinnenweber, Brandi Jones, Kate Faas and Matz all tallied two goals each to aid the Maryland offense.
"We had a great effort today and I'm really pleased," head coach Cathy Reese said. "Considering the weather conditions, I thought we reacted and handled it well. UNH really came to compete and I thought we were able to generate a lot of offense."
Maryland returns to action Wednesday with a highly-anticipated match with No. 5 Georgetown in College Park. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
