UC Davis Roars Past Detroit to Improve to 5-1

DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior midfielder Gina Hoffmire scored game highs of six goals and three assists, while senior Molly Lapolla added a hat trick, boosting UC Davis to an 18-6 win over Detroit in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Aggies improve to 5-1 for the season. The Titans slip to 3-6 overall.

Hoffmire scored four of her goals in the first half, after which UC Davis held a 9-4 lead. She also picked up four draw controls and a ground ball in the field. Freshmen Hannah Mirza and Anna Geissbuhler each tallied two goals and one assist, while senior Britt Farquharson also had a two-goal game. Senior Molly Peterson and junior Christina Corsa chipped in two assists apiece. Junior Alyse Lasater totaled four ground balls on defense.

For UDM, sophomore midfielder Emily Boissonneault shot 5 for 8 with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

UC Davis drew immediate blood in the contest as Hoffmire won the initial draw and took it to the net just 14 seconds into the game. Then Geissbuhler won that next draw, setting up a Lapolla goal a minute later. Hoffmire picked up the third draw of the game, then Mirza converted a Geissbuhler assist to push the lead to 3-0 after just two minutes of play.

Boissonneault almost single-handedly traded goal for goal with UC Davis for the remainder of the first period. She had three unassisted scores and a successful eight-meter attempt for the Titans, while the Aggie shooting cooled off in the frame. UC Davis had hit 4 of 5 to start the contest, but slipped to 5 for 21 during the next 25 minutes.

Detroit closed the gap to just four goals early in the second half on Boissonneault's fifth score, but Corsa hit her eight-meter shot and assisted Lapolla to ignite a run of eight unanswered for the Aggies.

Overall, UC Davis outshot its guest by a 45-16 margin, improving to 9 for 19 (.474) after the break. The Aggies also held the edge in draw controls (16-10) and turnovers (17-27).

UC Davis takes the next week off for final examinations before returning to action in neutral-site action against Liberto at Saint Francis.
