Guilford Falls to Visiting Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC Play

GREENSBORO, N.C. Laura Norris scored five goals and added five assists to lead visiting Virginia Wesleyan College past Guilford College, 15-12, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match Saturday.

Norris sparked the Marlins (3-3, 2-0 ODAC) to an early 5-1 lead with three goals and two assists in the game's opening 12:14. The Quakers (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) rallied to score six of the fist half's final seven scores to take a 7-6 lead at intermission. Carrie Ernst and Hannah Merrell both scored twice in the 6-1 Quakers' spurt.

Virginia Wesleyan's Courtney Williams scored twice in the opening minute of the second half to give the guests an 8-7 lead. Guilford's Emily Egan tied the game five-and-a-half minutes into the period before a Kirsten McGrath goal gave Virginia Wesleyan the lead for good.

Williams finished with three goals and Nikki Salyers tallied twice for the Marlins. Tara Harding added a goal, an assist, five ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover. Brittany MacKnew played the second half in goal and recorded three saves for the win.

Ernst paced Guilford with four goals and teammate Shelly Nogueira added three goals and one assist. She also caused four turnovers and had six ground balls, both game highs. Alyzza-May Callahan had 11 saves in goal.

Guilford hosts Christopher Newport Sunday (3/14) at 1:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
