Christopher Newport Races Past Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. Meghan Harkey scored six times and added two assists in visiting Christopher Newport University's 18-7 lacrosse victory at Guilford College Sunday. Kaitlin Quigley added five goals and two helpers and Lauren King tallied five times for the Captains (3-2).

After the Quakers (3-3) grabbed an early 3-1 lead, Christopher Newport reeled off six straight goals to take a 7-3 edge. Quigley and King both scored twice during the spurt, which propelled the guests to a 12-5 halftime lead. Quigley and Hartley both had four goals and an assist by intermission.

The Captains controlled possession for most of the game, thanks in part to 27 Guilford turnovers. Christopher Newport scored 11 times off of Guilford miscues and enjoyed a 36-19 edge in shots. The Captains' Morgan Layton caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls, both game highs. Goalie Gayle Robinson made five of Christopher Newport's seven saves in just over 51 minutes.

Carrie Ernst's three goals paced Guilford's offense. Teammates Shelly Nogueira and Ellie Merritt also scored twice. Goalie Alyzza-May Callahan had eight stops in nearly 37 minutes before giving way to rookie Liza Mettler, who made two saves in her college debut.

The Quakers return to action March 21 at Old Dominion Athletic Conference-rival Bridgewater College at 1:00 p.m.
