#2 Davenport Shuts out #5 St. John's in 2nd Half to Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After falling in the final seconds to #4 Dayton on Friday, the Panthers rebounded in a big way today as they downed #5 St. John's 13-7. The win came via a big second half in which DU outscored St. John's 5-0.

DU has challenged itself with numerous games against the top teams in the country and Sunday was no different as they welcomes #5 St. John's to the Turf Field. The Panthers led by one at halftime (8-7) and then behind their stellar defense, outscored their opponent 5-0 in the second to win 13-7.

Davenport started the game out strong as they scored the first two goals in the first five minutes behind Oliver Wade (Burlington, Ontario) and Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

After SJU scored two of their own, the two teams would manage to trade goals over the final 5:32 to keep the score tied at 3-3 after one quarter.

#5 St. John's struck first in the second quarter but it would be their only lead of the game as the #2 Panthers came right back with two straight goals from Tadas Anuzis (Lansing, Mich.) and Oliver Wade.

The offense was put on full display in the second quarter and after SJU tied the game with 11:10 to play, DU ran off the next two behind Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) and Sean Beer (Aurora, Ontario). Beer would later add his second of the quarter to give the Panthers an 8-7 lead at the break.

Head Coach Bob Clarkson made a few adjustments in the locker room and the defense came out with a huge second half as they shutout the 5th ranked team in the country. Davenport got five goals of their own as Morris added three more for his game high four on the game.

DU improves to 7-1 overall is now 5-1 against teams ranked higher than #19. The Panthers will take on Pittsburgh on March 20 before traveling to Saginaw for a conference game against the Cardinals of SVSU on March 27. The next home game for DU will be on April 1 against Calvin.
