Hobart Deals Right Suits, Downs Binghamton in Home Opener

GENEVA, N.Y.-Senior midfielder Mike Suits (CBA/Jamesville, N.Y.) scored with 2:07 remaining and the Hobart lacrosse team's defense pitched a second half shutout to lift Hobart to a 6-5 win over Binghamton at McCooey Field this afternoon.

Sophomore faceoff specialist Bobby Dattilo (Pinkerton Academy/Derry, N.H.) made sure the Statesmen (2-2) had plenty of possession time, winning 14 of 15 faceoffs and collecting a game-high seven ground balls.

The defense, backstopped by senior goalie Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.), held the Bearcats (2-5) scoreless over the final 37:38 allowing the offense to erase a two-goal halftime deficit. Silberlicht made 11 saves, including BU's final look at the cage with 1 second remaining in regulation.

The Statesmen also limited Binghamton's leading scorer, first-year attackman Matt Springer (Hamburg/Hamburg, N.Y.), to just a single assist. He came into the game ranked 16th in the nation in goals per game (2.38).

Senior attackman Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.), sophomore attackman Chris Pedersen (Ridgewood/Nyack, N.Y.), and junior long-stick midfielder Alex Caton (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.) paced Hobart with two points apiece.

First-year attackman Tyler Perrelle (Mahopac/Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Bearcats with a goal and an assist.

Curtin extended his points streak to 18 games with the first goal of the afternoon 1:18 into the game. Caton capitalized on a BU turnover near midfield, scooping up a ground ball, charging into the attack zone, and feeding Curtin.

Perrelle tied the score at the 9:44 mark, taking a pass from senior attackman Jeff Rurey (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.). Junior midfielder David Raleigh (Brien McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) gave Binghamton a 2-1 lead with 4:12 left in the first frame, taking a ground ball coast-to-coast for his third goal of the year.

Hobart reclaimed the lead with back-to-back goals to close out the first quarter scoring. Sophomore midfielder Derek Akner (Oceanside/Rockville Center, N.Y.) potted the first thanks to an assist by Pedersen. Senior midfielder Mike Lazore (Immaculate Heart/Carthage, N.Y.) fired home his fourth of the year on a bounce shot with 52 seconds to go.

The second quarter belonged to the Bearcats. Perrelle tied the game three minutes in and, just over two minutes later, junior attackman Frank Donlon (Comsewogue/Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored his ninth of the year to put Binghamton in front. Sophomore defenseman Ben Waldron (West Genesee/Camilius, N.Y.) took advantage of a Hobart giveaway and struck for his first goal of the season.

The Statesmen outshot the Bearcats in the second quarter 14-9, but only put two shots on frame, both of which were stopped by junior goalie Dan Salazzo (Herkimer CC/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). He finished with 11 saves.

With 6:44 left in the third quarter, Pedersen halved Hobart's deficit thanks to another Caton assist.

The Statesmen pulled even with the "how'd he do that?!?" moment of the game. Dattilo won the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter and raced into the box where he passed to senior d-middie Kurtis Gibbs (Bridgton Academy/Ipswich, Mass.) in the middle of the field. Gibbs spun to his left, then to his right, weaving through heavy traffic and unleashed a low shot that beat Salazzo.

Over the next 12 minutes, Hobart got off eight shots, while Binghamton took seven. Both teams had to kill off a 30 second penalty, but neither team broke the stalemate. Suits came closest, hitting the crossbar with 10:08 to go.
