Longwood Comeback Falls Short at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. The Longwood University women's lacrosse team's comeback bid fell short as the Lancers fell at the University of Richmond 14-12 on Tuesday afternoon in Richmond. Junior Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) led Longwood (2-4) with three goals while freshman Jamie Brentlinger/Odenton, Md. (Arundel) added two goals and one assist. The Spiders (3-5) were led by Gabi Wiegand with a game-high four goals.

The Lancers return to action on Saturday, March 20, when they face National Lacrosse Conference foe Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, at 1:00 p.m..

Richmond jumped out to a 4-1 lead with 14:24 remaining in the first half. Senior Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) scored for Longwood with 22:14 left in the first half on a free position shot for Longwood's only goal during the opening stretch. O'Brien scored her first goal with 12:44 remaining before the Spiders added two more goals to take a 6-2 lead with 9:21 left in the first half.

The Lancers scored three goals over a three minute stretch, two of them by junior Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) and the other by Jamie Brentlinger to cut the Richmond lead to 6-4 with 5:19 remaining in the opening period. The Spiders scored the final two goals to take an 8-5 lead in to halftime.

Richmond picked up where they left off to start the second half, scoring five of the first six goals in the second period to open a 13-6 lead with 21:20 remaining. Junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) scored the only goal during that stretch for Longwood.

The Lancers turned on the offense during the final 20 minutes as Jamie Brentlinger scored an unassisted goal and O'Brien added a pair of free position goals over a three minute stretch to cut the lead to 13-9 with 18:35 remaining. The Spiders added one more goal on a free position shot to push the advantage to five at 14-9 with 8:20 remaining. Longwood scored three more goals and had possession of the ball at the end of the game but could not close the gap, falling 14-12.

O'Brien led the Lancers with three goals, including 2-2 on free position shots. Jamie Brentlinger added two goals and one assist with two draw controls. Senior Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine's) scooped up four ground balls and three draw controls and caused four turnovers.

Karli Brentlinger scored one goal on nine shots, eight of those shots on goal, and picked up seven draw controls. Junior Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) started in goal for the Lancers and gave up 13 goals with seven saves in 39:45. Senior Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) allowed one goal with two saves in the final 20:15.

Richmond was led by Wiegand with four goals and one assist while Mary Flowers added three goals. Erica Marrocco played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 11 saves.

Longwood controlled the draw 18-10 and was a perfect 8-8 on clear attempts. Richmond edged the Lancers 23-20 in ground balls and outshot Longwood 32-26. --
