Albion Defeats Southwestern for First-Ever Program Win

ADRIAN, Mich. Albion College hosted Southwestern (Texas) at Adrian College and put on a dominant first half performance leading 9-2 at the break. Albion controlled the second quarter, scoring six times, as it earned its first-ever varsity victory in men's lacrosse with a 15-11 decision over Southwestern. It was just the second contest of the season for the Britons, coached by Jacob DeCola.

Mitch Loney (Commerce Township/Walled Lake Northern) scored four goals in a 5 ½ minute span late in the second period as Albion built their 9-2 lead before halftime. Loney added a third quarter goal as the margin ballooned to 13-3.

In the middle of the third quarter, Albion let up the gas just enough to allow Southwestern to put a rally together. Albion held off Southwestern to gain the victory as the Pirates scored seven of the final nine goals of the contest. Southwestern outscored Albion, 4-2, in the fourth quarter.

Jamie Kehoe (Clinton Township/De La Salle), who assisted on four first-half goals, scored both Briton goals in the fourth period. Dan Genord (Ann Arbor/Gabriel Richard) helped Albion get off to a good start by scoring a pair of even-strength goals in the first quarter and adding a power play tally in the second. Jeremy Simms (Montrose/Powers Catholic) was a major factor in the contest and won 21 of 29 face-offs, contributed two goals in five shots.

Goalkeeper Kyle Smith (Macomb/De La Salle) was credited with 11 saves.
