Vassar Starts Fast, Downs Castleton State

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 10, 2010) The Vassar College men's lacrosse broke out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and extended that lead to 11-0 midway through the third quarter en route to a convincing 14-4 victory over Castleton State College Wednesday afternoon in non-league action at Weinberg Field.

Vassar evens its record at 3-3. The Brewers will begin Liberty League play next Wednesday, March 24 with a 7:00 p.m. game against Rennselaer. Castleton drops to 1-2 and next hosts Plymouth State on March 20 at 3:00 p.m.

The Brewers were dominant in victory, getting goals from seven different players, including a hat trick each from senior midfielder Nick Cardillo and junior midfielder Ryan Hart. In the victory, Vassar set season-best highs in points (20), goals (14), shots (49) and shots on goal (25). Four of Vassar's goals came when the Brewers were playing a man-up as the Spartans were riddled with 10 penalty's in the game.

Vassar got on the board early, getting the game's first two goals within the opening three minutes of action, getting unassisted goals from Cardillo and Matthew Pearce. Three different Brewers junior Zach Beachump and sophomore's Jack Gross and Jeff Lee lifted Vassar to a 6-0 first quarter lead.

Over the next two quarters, the Brewers would tack on five more goals before the Spartans got on the board. In the final four minutes of the third quarter and the first minute of the fourth quarter, Castleton State sophomore attack Samuel Bailey tallied two goals and senior midfielder Korey Counos added one goal to bring the Spartans within 11-3.

Hart scored his second and third goals of the game in the final four minutes of the play.

Vassar junior goalie Alex Tice earned his third win of the season, making four saves against 13 Castleton State shots. Spartans sophomore goalie David DeGhetto made 11 saves against 49 Vassar shots.
