Dolphins Cruise by Niagara Behind Brigandi's Five Goals

Niagara University, N.Y. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Brigandi (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/UMass) scored five goals as the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 15-5 win over Niagara on Wednesday afternoon at Niagara Field.

The Dolphins, who defeated the Purple Eagles 13-7 last year, tallied 10 goals over the opening 23:17 of the game to take a 10-0 lead. Junior Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at the 25:23 mark.

Brigandi added a pair of goals off free-position shots around a tally from junior Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) to put the Dolphins up four with 17:11 remaining in the half. Less than one minute later, junior Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) finished off a feed from freshman Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage).

Sophomore Stephanie Dussing (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) increased the lead to 6-0 with an unassisted goal just under midway through the stanza. Elmer added her second and third goals of the half in a span of 41 seconds, the last coming off an assist from senior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus). Lundblad became the sixth Dolphin to find the back of the net off a pass from Kamide with just under eight minutes to go.

Freshman Kathryn Barry (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) completed Le Moyne's first-half scoring with 6:43 left off a pass from Dussing. Leigh Downing scored for the Purple Eagles with 59 seconds remaining in the period to pull her team within 10-1 at the intermission.

After Downing scored the first goal of the second half, the Dolphins scored four straight goals to take a game-high 12 goal lead. Dussing scored off a pass from Kamide with 21:33 to play before Brigandi scored three goals in a span of 5:28. Brigandi's first goal in the stretch was via a free-position shot, the second was unassisted and freshman Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) registered the assist on the third.

Niagara answered with three unassisted goals over 5:08 to narrow its deficit to 14-5 with 4:50 to go. Downing tallied the first goal, while Emily French and Courtney Formato tallied the second and third. Freshman Kelly Condon (Victor, N.Y./Canandaigua) scored for the Dolphins with 2:13 left to wrap up the game's scoring.

Sophomore Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made five saves to record her third consecutive victory. Alma Aponte turned away four shots for the Purple Eagles.

Le Moyne (3-3), which has won three consecutive games after dropping its first three, returns to action on Saturday against La Salle at Solvay High School at 12:00 p.m.
