Vermont Falls to Siena in Catamounts' Home Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Caitlin Mikel scored a game-high five goals and Michelle Andreo added a hat trick to lead the Siena Saints past Vermont, 14-11 in the Catamounts' home opener at Moulton Winder Field on Wednesday. The win, Siena's first-ever over the Catamounts in the all-time series, moves the Saints to 4-2 on the year. Vermont falls to 1-4 overall.

The Catamounts held a 3-2 lead after an unassisted goal by Samantha Stern (Cherry Hill, N.J.) at the 17:25 mark of the first half. Siena closed the half with a pair of goals eight minutes apart and took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

The Saints rattled off four straight tallies to begin the second half and stretched their lead to five, 8-3, with 25:21 remaining in the game. UVM cut the lead to four at the 19:01 mark when Sara Buxton (Northfield, Ill.) converted an assist from Adison Rounds (Centennial, Colo.). The Saints pushed the lead back to six with 17:43 left.

The Catamounts mounted one final rally, scoring five of the next six goals to climb back within two, 13-11, with 8:03 showing on the clock, but could not complete the comeback. The Saints added an insurance goal with 49 seconds left to seal the victory.

Megan MacDonald (Wayland, Mass.) and Buxton each recorded hat tricks to lead Vermont. Buxton, who was the America East Player of the Game, also added an assist and reached the 100-point milestone, becoming the eighth player in the program's history to reach the 100-point plateau.

The Catamounts out shot Siena 45-25, but went 2 for 10 on free position shots. Kristin Concordia made a career-high 21 stops for Siena in net, while Taylor Hadcock (Londonderry, N.H.) was credited with five saves for the Catamounts.

Vermont returns to action on Saturday (March 20) when it hosts Marist at 1:00 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field.
