Denison Drops Birmingham-Southern to Go 3-0 out West

The Big Red took a six-goal lead into the second half and outscored Birmingham-Southern 8-0 in the second half, resulting in a 18-5 victory over the Panthers in Forest Grove, Ore.

Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) entered the game with a 5-1 record but fell behind 4-0 in the first eight minutes of play after a pair of goals from Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Lisa Feroli (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh).

Leading 11-5 at halftime, Denison sophomore Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) went to work in the second half, scoring two goals and three of her season-high four assists. For the game Thurner finished with three goals and four assists. Her seven point effort was the second-most in her short career. She netted 10 points last season against Guilford.

While Thurner led the way in points, Myhrum and Feroli paced the Big Red in the goal scoring category. Both players ended with four goals apiece. In four games this season Myhrum has led DU in scoring in all three victories and has 12 goals on the season.

Myhrum also led the team in ground balls with six and Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier[Ill.]) was the team leader with six draw controls. First-year goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) posted two saves in 46 minutes as the Big Red defense held the Panthers to just 11 shots in the game and only two shot attempts in the second half.

Denison moves to 3-1 with the win and will return to Granville primed for their 2010 home opener on March 26 versus Sewanee. Birmingham-Southern falls to 5-2 with the loss.
