Castleton Runs by Colby-Sawyer, Wins Second Straight

Castleton, VT - Marie VanDerKar (Manchester, VT) scored five goals and handed out one assist to lead eight Spartans in the scoring column as Castleton earned an 18-8 non-conference win over Colby-Sawyer in womens lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, CT) also turned in a six-point performance on three goals and three assists, while Nicole Adams (Rutland, VT) tallied three goals and one assist. Katelyn Nardini (Scotia-Glenville, NY) and Elizabeth Haggerty (Centerport, NY) each had two goals, while Stephanie Pearce (Shoreham, NY), Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, NY) and Corinne Healy (Jefferson Township, NJ) each added single tallies.

Brittney Murphy (Woburn, MA) led the Chargers (1-3) with three goals and one assist, while Elaina Kennedy (Sunderland, MA) added two goals and one assist. Hannah Cullen (Penacock, NH), Victoria Bove (Middletown, RI) and Samantha Draper (Duxbury, MA) rounded out the Charger scorers.

Colby-Sawyer got on the board first on Cullens fourth goal of the season, but Castleton answered with five-straight scores and never looked back in improving to 2-1 on the young season. VanDerKar tallied a pair during the surge, and Paproski added a goal and an assist to bolster the early attack.

Murphy cut the lead to three with just over 21 minutes remaining, but back-to-back goals from Nardini and Adams pushed the lead to 7-2 with 11:29 remaining in the first half. The Chargers outscored Castleton 3-2 over the remainder of the half, and the Spartans took a 9-5 lead into the interval.

The second half belonged to the Spartans as Paproski opened the scoring just one minute in, and tallied once more just one-minute-and-thirty-six seconds later to push the lead to 11-5. Castleton never led by less than five the remainder of the contest in securing the win.

Rebecca Duszak (Erieville, NY) made five saves in the win and had five ground balls. VanDerKar impressed in all facets of the game, scoring her five goals on just six shots while also leading the Spartans with six draw controls and four caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls. Mazzola corralled a game-high eight ground balls, to go along with five draw controls and four caused turnovers.

Natalie Hogeland (Williamstown, MA) stopped eight shots on goal and led the Chargers with seven ground balls. Deb MacEachern Billerica, MA) corralled six ground balls and had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Castleton returns to action at Spartan Stadium Saturday when the Spartans play host to Plymouth State at 1:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer opens play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Saturday at Salve Regina, first draw set for 1:00 p.m.
