No. 18 Lynchburg Shuts Down Scranton

LYNCHBURG, Va.-Lynchburg College took control early and cruised to a 16-4 victory over The University of Scranton Wednesday evening.

The 18th-ranked Hornets jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period and held the Royals to just two goals the rest of the way to improve to 4-2 on the season. The loss was the third straight for Scranton, now 2-3.

Ethan Farrell led Lynchburg with three goals and an assist and Dylan Hoff added a pair of goals. Freshman attacker Oliver Nugent (Short Hills, N.J./Morristown Beard) led the Royals with a goal and an assist and junior attacker JP Barton (North Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen), junior midfielder Patrick Cefalu (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), and senior midfielder Doug Homan (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) chipped in a goal apiece.

The Hornets broke the game open in the second period on goals by Austin Jeter, Jon Gill, Max Voumard, and Pat Ohrem to take a 10-2 lead by intermission.

After Homan scored a goal off the first of two assists by freshman attacker Taylor Nelson (Chester Spring, Pa./Downingtown East) with 6:46 remaining in the first period, the Royals were held scoreless for nearly 35 minutes until Oliver answered with a goal off of a play set up by Nelson with 25 seconds left in the third period.

Barton opened the fourth period with his second goal of the season before the Hornets closed out the scoring with three straight goals from Chris Eggeling, Andrew Wilfong, and Joshua Davey.

Cefalu was once again a dominating presence in the face-offs, winning 15 of 23 attempts to bring his season total to 77 for 107 (.720).

Lynchburg out-shot the Royals, 47-33, and converted 3 of 6 extra-man opportunities.

Scranton will host Babson College this Saturday, March 20, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
