Connecticut College Holds off Wheaton in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla.--The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team pulled out its second consecutive one goal decision at the Disney Sports Complex Thursday, a 12-11 triumph against Wheaton College on a cool night in the Sunshine State.

Junior Abby Hill (Stoneham, Mass.) exploded with six goals and sophomore net-minder Ashleigh Kowtoniuk (Johnstown, Pa.) made 12 saves for the Camels, denying the Lyons on eight of their nine free position shots in the contest.

With the win, the Camels improve their mark to 2-1 while Wheaton slips to 1-2 in the setback.

Sophomores Hope Barone (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in with two goals each while senior Sara Christopher (Andover, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for Connecticut College.

Senior Kylee Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) corralled a team-best four ground balls for the winning side and classmate Cookie Smith (Framingham, Mass.) added three ground balls to go along with a pair of caused turnovers.

Wheaton College sophomore Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass.) had five goals and one assist in the setback. Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H.) chipped in with five points on two goals and three assists for the Lyons.

Chrissy Norberg (Winchester, Mass.) had a hat-trick with three goals for Wheaton and Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt.) added two assists.

Hill scored three straight goals in the early going that vaulted the Camels out to a 4-2 lead. The Camel advantage ballooned to 7-2 after Barone supplied her second goal of the half with 6:29 remaining. But the Lyons rallied with the final three scoring strikes of the first half. When Powers buried a one-timer on a Colburn feed with 31.6 seconds remaining, Wheaton was back in the game, trailing 7-5 at the intermission.

In the second stanza, Hill continued to use her speed to get to the cage with two of the Camels' first three goals. When Driscoll converted on a wraparound move for a goal with 11:19 remaining, Connecticut College enjoyed an 11-7 lead.

Wheaton clawed back to within two before Hill shredded the nets with her sixth goal of the night to make it a 12-9 contest with 7:16 to go.

However, the Lyons continued to respond, and Powers scored the next two goals to make it a one goal decision. In the closing moments, Wheaton had the ball with a chance to tie. But Connecticut College senior Kristen Dirmaier (South Burlington, Vt.) induced a turnover with seven seconds left and wrestled away the ground ball in traffic to seal the victory for the Camels.

Wheaton College freshman Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, Mass.) made four saves for the Lyons, allowing six goals in 27:44. Junior Marianna Marcellino (Milton, Mass.) stopped four shots in 32:16 of relief duty.
