CATONSVILLE, Md. – Junior Grant Catalino tied his career high with seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the No. 5 University of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over UMBC at UMBC Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Terps' starting attack unit of Catalino, Travis Reed (two goals and two assist) and Ryan Young (three assists) blitzed the Retrievers for 14 points, while Maryland's first midfield of Jake Bernhardt, Adam Sear and Will Yeatman, which had been quite in the Terrapins' previous two games, combined for five goals.

The offense wasn't the only bright spot for the Terps as the defense stepped up to help snap a three-game losing streak to UMBC. Senior goalie Brian Phipps made a season-best 12 saves, while All-America defender Max Schmidt had three groundballs and three caused turnovers.

With the victory Maryland moves to 6-0 for the first time since 2004 when the Terps got off to an 8-0 start. The loss pushes the Retrievers to 1-5 this season.

The game got off to a shaky start with an early penalty giving UMBC an extra- man chance, but the Terps' man-down unit killed the penalty, giving the offense a chance to go to work. It didn't take Maryland long to take the 1-0 lead as Sear scored on a low-to-low shot from the right alley off an assist from junior Travis Reed at the 11:29 mark.

After the Retrievers tied the game with 5:48 left in the first on a goal by Shane Ryznar, Catalino gave the Terps the lead back a minute later. He took the ball on the right wing and dodged around UMBC's Matt Kresse and snuck a low shot past Kevin Kohri for the 2-1 advantage.

With the clock winding down in the opening period the Terps' second midfield provided a boost once again. Redshirt sophomore Drew Snider dodged a UMBC defender on the left wing and weaved his way to the middle of the Retriever defensive box and slipped a shot past the right hip of Kohri for a 3-1 Maryland lead.

The Terps drew first blood in the second quarter with another Catalino goal at the 13:26 mark. The Terrapin lead grew to 5-1 30 seconds later when Bernhardt ripped a laser from 12 yards out into the upper left corner. Bernhardt just entered the game from the substitution box and had a full head of steam as he dodged down the middle of the field.

Senior Fran Gormely picked up his first assist since March 13, 2007 when he got the ball to sophomore Michael Shakespeare in front of the crease and Shakespeare bounced a shot past Kohri for a 6-1 lead at the 8:30 mark of the second.

UMBC snapped a scoreless stretch of 14:31 with a goal by Matt Latham at the 6:17. But a illegal substitution penalty on the Retrievers gave the Terps their first man-up chance of the day and it took Maryland just nine seconds to convert. Catalino sent a crisp pass to Reed on the right goal line extended and Reed easily beat Kohri.

The lead grew to 8-2 in favor of the Terps at the 4:50 mark when Catalino scored his third of the half. Young fed Catalino the ball on the left wing and Catalino bounced a shot off of the UMBC goalie for the hat trick.

UMBC stopped the bleeding with Ryznar's second goal of the game with just six ticks left in the half.

Catalino's big day continued early in the third quarter, assisting on Maryland's first two goals after the break.

While Catalino earned the assist, Maryland's ninth goal of the day was really earned by the defense. Phipps' 10th save of the game was picked up by junior Dan Burns and he found redshirt junior Brian Farrell breaking out up field. Farrell drew the UMBC defense to him before flipping a pass to Catalion, who made the "one-more" pass to Reed, who finished from the right goal line extended.
