Cantwell Guides No. 20 Rutgers to Victory Over Denver

DENVER, Colo. (March 20, 2010) The No. 20 Rutgers women's lacrosse team (6-2), playing its third of four-straight road games, traveled to Denver on Saturday, March 20. The Scarlet Knights snapped their two-game losing streak with an 11-8 win over the Pioneers (6-3).

Senior attack Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) scored a game-high four goals as the Scarlet Knights ended a 5-5 tie at halftime en route to the three-point victory.

Sophomore Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) posted the game's opening goal on an assist from senior Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.), while Cantwell tallied RU's other score for a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers took over the lead with three-straight goals, however, both teams traded goals to end the first half with a 5-5 score.

Junior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) responded first at the start of the second half, posting her 13th goal of the season to pull Rutgers ahead 6-5. Denver tied the score again at 6-6 with a goal from Tully Stapp, but the Scarlet Knights would post back-to-back to goals to regain the advantage and pull away for good.

Junior Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) and Cryan gave the Scarlet Knights a 8-6 lead with their goals, while Watts, Cantwell and sophomore Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) each found the back of the net to give Rutgers its 11-8 victory.

Watts and Anderson ended the game with a pair of goals each to add to Cantwell's four tallies. Welsh scored a single goal, while Cryan had a goal and an assist. McGinley scored a goal and matched her season high with two assists.

The Scarlet Knights will wrap up their four-game road trip on Sunday, March 28, when they return to BIG EAST Conference action to take on Syracuse at the Carrier Dome at 1:00 p.m.
