Dickenson Helps Denver Stun No. 15 Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. (March 20, 2010) – Juniors Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) and Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) each scored three goals but it was not enough as Denver rallied to top the #15 (IL/USILA) Stony Brook men's lacrosse team, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

The Pioneers outscored the Seawolves, 6-1, in the fourth quarter. Senior Tom Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y.) had a goal and four assists for Stony Brook (4-2), which had eight different players score goals. Mark Matthews and Patrick Rogers tallied three goals apiece for Denver (4-4).

“We didn't make enough plays down the stretch to win it,” head coach Rick Sowell said. “Give Denver credit for battling back; they had some long possessions and were able to make some plays.”

Stony Brook led 5-1 after one quarter and 6-1, its largest lead, after McBride's 24th goal of the season. Compitello's goal, the first of the game, came from his knees. Denver scored four straight to get within one, but Crowley's goal with four seconds left in the first half gave Stony Brook a two-goal advantage.

The Pioneers tied the game at seven, but the Seawolves started to pull away, getting goals from Crowley, McBride, sophomore Kyle Belton (Langley, British Columbia) and senior Steven Waldeck (Levittown, N.Y.). Belton's goal was the only man-up score of the afternoon.

Following a clear attempt, senior Michael Sopko (Shoreham, N.Y.) found McBride, who scored his third of the game to make it 12-8.

Five different players scored for Denver in the fourth quarter. Charley Dickenson's goal with 2:37 was the game-winner. Crowley and Compitello each took a shot with under 10 seconds left.

Waldeck finished with a game-high seven ground balls. Senior Charlie Paar (Huntington, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Seawolves, who were 3-3 in their man-down defense.

Stony Brook is home for #7/10 Cornell on Tuesday night. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Senior Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) scored the game-winning goal for the University of Denver men's lacrosse team (4-4) and finished the day with three assists, lifting the Pioneers to a 13-12 victory over the No. 15 Stony Brook Seawolves (4-2) on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y. The win marks the first road victory for the Pioneers this season and is the first home loss suffered by the Seawolves.

"I am so proud of the way our guys responded today, being down twice by a significant margin and finding a way to battle back and eventually get the win," said head coach Bill Tierney. "This is a great way for us to end our spring break trip and a great momentum booster as we head home to host Air Force in a non-conference match-up."

Leading the offensive scoring effort for the Pioneers was sophomore Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.), who scored a career-high three goals and sophomore Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario), who tied his season-high with three goals. Senior Cameron Kerr (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) tied his career-high with two goals, while five other Pioneers dished in to secure Denver's fourth win of the season.

In his second start of the season, senior Peter Lowell (Freeport, Maine) earned his first win of the year making 10 saves, five in the first quarter alone.

After allowing the Seawolves to score just three minutes into the game's action, Rogers scored his first of the game, fourth of the season less than two minutes later to even the score. However, Stony Brook used a four-goal barrage to close out the quarter, and then added its fifth consecutive goal to start the second quarter, swinging the momentum drastically.
