Dolphins Drop Skyline Opener at Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. -- The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team dropped its Skyline Conference opener at Montclair State on Saturday afternoon by a score of 19-5. Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, N.Y.) and Kelly Martin (Stony Point, N.Y.) each scored a pair of goals for the Dolphins in the contest.

After Martin and Julia Caro (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) sandwiched goals around a Maggie Fallon tally for the Red Hawks to give the Mount a 2-1 lead, Montclair St. ran off 10 straight goals to open an 11-2 advantage at the 6:20 mark of the first half. Mitchell broke the streak for Montclair St. with an unassisted marker, but the Red Hawks closed the half with three straight tallies to take a 14-3 lead into halftime.

Montclair St. (2-3, 1-0 Skyline) continued its strong play to open the second half with three straight markers, before Martin got the Mount on the board for the first time in the period with her second goal of the tilt. The Red Hawks outscored the Dolphins 5-2 in the final 30 minutes to secure their first league win of the season.

Mitchell finished the day with four points after adding two assists for four points. She also added a draw control for the Dolphins. Erin Woerner (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the Mount with two caused turnovers, while Kim Freaso (Setauket, N.Y.) and Jackie Horn (Setauket, N.Y.) each picked up three groundballs. Horn made nine saves in the game for the Dolphins, including six in the first half.

Montclair St. was paced Kayla Henderson and Meghan Spitzer who each finished with five points. Henderson tallied four goals and added a helper, while Spitzer finished with three markers and a pair of assists. The Red Hawks had six players score at least two goals in the game.

The loss is Mount Saint Vincent's third straight to open the season and drops it to 0-3 overall and to 0-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Saturday, March 27 when they host Mount Saint Mary.
