Wesley Fights off Widener Rally to Gain the Victory

DOVER, Del. - Wesley College jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the third quarter and outlasted Widener 15-12.

The Pride (1-3) jumped ahead 3-0 in the first 10 minutes behind goals by Kevin Rider, Andrew Janusz and Ryan Shewell. The Wolverines (1-5), however, ripped off the next four goals to start what would evolve into a 14-3 run that lasted until the closing minutes of the third quarter.

Wesley got onto the scoreboard with a man up goal by Eric Crumbock (Levittown, Pa./Truman), the first of his four goals on the evening. A late score by Brad Bivins (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) from Jack Skeels (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) cut the score to 3-2 at the end of the first. Wesley then opened the second quarter with goals from Nick Pisacano (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Crumbock to claim a 4-3 lead with 11:20 left in the half.

Just over a minute later, Steve Cull knotted the score at 4-4, but back-to-back goals by Dan Skeels (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and a goal by Justin D'Alonzo (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) reclaimed the lead for Wesley. Janusz tried to stop the momentum with his second goal of the day for the Pride, but scores by Tyler DiStefano (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), Rob King (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Crumbock lifted Wesley to a 10-5 halftime lead.

Crumbock netted his fourth goal of the game less than a minute into the second half and Pisacano, who assisted on Crumbock's goal, put Wesley ahead 12-5 with 12:32 to go in the third.

The Pride gained some momentum when defender Josh Lovelace sliced through Wesley's defense to clear the ball and sent home a goal. The Wolverines tacked on two more goals, one each by Joe Trezza (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Dan Skeels before Widener's offense came to life.

Skeels' gave Wesley a 14-6 lead with 3:57 left in the third, but the Pride won the ensuing face off and Cory Malampy cut it to seven just 11 seconds later. Mike Vandegrift had his hand in three more goals before the close of the period, scoring two and assisting on a Steve Cull goal, as Widener pulled to within 14-10 to start the fourth quarter.

Cull scored again just 20 seconds into the fourth and Malampy took a Vandegrift feed with 11:06 left in the game and Wesley's lead was down to two.

Wesley switched goalkeepers, making junior Mike McGuigan (Middletown, Del./Middletown) the fourth Wolverine to see time in 2010. The newcomer proved up to the task, racking up eight saves down the stretch as the Wolverines held on. Four of those saves came in the final 2:34 after Wesley gained some breathing room with a behind the back goal by Brad Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) with an assist from Trezza with 4:13 on the clock.

Crumbock and Pisacano led Wesley with five points apiece. Crumbock added an assist to his four goals, while Pisacano scored twice and helped on three other goals. Dan Skeels added three goals and an assist.

Dan Tryon (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) notched a career-high eight ground balls. Michael McQuarrie (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) won 13 of 18 face offs.

Vandegrift had two goals and two assists in the loss. Cull scored three times.

The Pride also used a pair of goaltenders. Kevin Carney and Bobby Schluter each played a half and made five saves.

Wesley travels to No. 3 Salisbury on March 24 at 7:00 PM.
