Trombetta Leads Robert Morris to Win over Wagner

Moon Township, Pa. - March 21, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials took on Northeast Conference foe Wagner on Sunday afternoon and stormed past the Seahawks, 14-2, at Joe Walton Stadium. In the win, junior Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) led the charge by tying a Robert Morris single-game record for goals with six and points with 10, as she also chipped in four assists.

The win maintains the Colonials undefeated conference record at 2-0 and brings their overall record to 4-3, while the Seahawks drop to 0-2 in the league and 1-6 overall.

Sophomore Erin Finnegan (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) also put in a strong performance with three goals, while senior Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y. / Old Dominion) added two goals and one assist and junior Lynette Gomez (Ocean, N.J. / Ocean Township) added two scores.

Trombetta started off the contest with back-to-back unassisted goals at the 1:50 and 4:55 marks to give RMU an early 2-0 lead. Wagner responded with a goal by Krista Malayter to make it a one goal game, but the Seahawk defense could not contain Finnegan, who answered back with three of RMUs next four goals.

With 5:17 left to play Teri Noll found an opening in RMU's net to make it a 6-2 game, but Beck scored her second goal of the contest with 3:54 left to play to give the Colonials back their five goal lead.

Robert Morris did not let up in the second half and held the Seahawks scoreless through the entire 30 minutes of play. Trombetta played an outstanding second half and had a hand in all of RMU's seven goals. Sophomore Courtney Sicinski (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) opened up the second frame with a goal at 2:13 off a Trombetta assist.

At 5:02, Trombetta scored an unassisted goal and then stunned the Seahawks by scoring three more Colonial goals. Gomez ended the game with two goals within the last six minutes with Trombetta, once again, setting up the play on both goals.

Junior Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) tallied 11 saves in the win with an impressive .846 save percentage, while Alex Johnston tallied 14 saves for the Seahawks.

The Colonials converted on 3 of 6 free position shots, while the Seahawks were successful on just 1 of 5 opportunities.

Robert Morris returns to action on Friday, March 26 when it takes on Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. at 3:00 p.m.

Moon Township, PA On the heels of Thursday's excruciating 13-12 loss at Saint Francis (PA), the Wagner College women's lacrosse dropped a 14-2 decision at Robert Morris this afternoon.

In losing their sixth straight game, the Seahawks fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in the Northeast Conference while Robert Morris improves to 4-3 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.

Ashley Trombetta led the way for Robert Morris with nine points on six goals and three assists. Trombetta got into the act early, scoring the Colonials' first two goals of the game before senior midfielder Krista Malayter (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) registered an unassisted goal with 22:54 left in the opening half to make it a 2-1 game.

After RMU rattled off four unanswered tallies, Wagner's other goal was notched by senior midfielder Teri Noll (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Ellbridge Central) on a free position attempt with 5:17 left to make it a 6-2 deficit.

The Colonials netted the final goal of the first half to take a 7-2 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, RMU out-scored Wagner 7-0 in the en route to the 14-2 victory.

Statistically, the Colonials outshot Wagner 32-15, led in ground balls 15-13 and in draw controls 10-8. RMU was 3 of 6 on free position attempts while Wagner was 1 of 5 on free position attempts. In goal, senior Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) came up with 14 saves on the afternoon.

Wagner is next in action on Friday, March 26 when the Seahawks play host to the Pioneers of Sacred Heart in a 3:30 pm tilt.
