Knight Leads Southern Maine Past MIT in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Senior Jessica Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) scored a game-high six goals as the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal deficit in the second half en route to a 15-13 victory over M.I.T. in a non-conference game played Monday at Lake Lytal Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The win was the second straight for the Huskies since dropping their season opener to nationally ranked Colby College. The Engineers lost for the first time this season after winning their first two games.

Junior Jessica Martineau (Yarmouth, Maine) and freshman Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) each found the net three times for the Huskies. Junior Kristy Kendrick (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) added a goal and an assist. Rookie goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) was credited with eight saves.

M.I.T. senior Casey Flynn (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists. Junior Erica Little (Sherborn, Mass./St. Mark's), freshman Laura Wacker (Brookline, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) and sophomore Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md./Sherwood) scored two goals apiece. Sophomore goalie Allison Hamilos (Medfield, Mass.) stopped 11 shots.

Trailing 7-6 at halftime, Turcotte got the Huskies even with her second goal of the game 29 seconds into the second half. M.I.T. responded by scoring the next three goals in a span of 1:45 to take its biggest lead of the game, 10-7. Flynn, Leger and Kauffman netted the scores.

Turcotte chopped one off the lead within a couple of minutes before both teams went into a scoring drought for nearly 11 minutes. Martineau and Kendrick scored 28 seconds apart midway through the half to tied the game. Martineau added two more to give USM a run of five straight goals and a 12-10 lead.

M.I.T. twice pulled within one on goals by Wacker and Flynn. Knight, who had four goals in the first half, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 1:47 to play, and added an insurance tally with 54 seconds to play. Little got one back in the final seconds to account for the final score.

Southern Maine will take on Allegheny College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in West Palm Beach. M.I.T. will play Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday (10:00 a.m.).
