Ohio Wesleyan Outguns Tiffin for One-Goal Victory

Senior midfielder Jessica Copeland (Ligonier, Pa./Foxcroft (Va.)) and senior attacker Elizabeth Lambert (Alexandria, Va./Williams) each contributed a goal and an assist during a late 6-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and sophomore Lauren Figy (Westfield, Mass.) made a crucial save in the closing seconds to preserve the lead as the Bishops edged Tiffin in non-conference action on Monday at Selby Field.

The Dragons had broken a 12-12 tie with four straight goals, collecting a free-position score from Ali Quast and an unassisted goal by Allyn Saling. Emily Miller tacked on an unassisted goal with 14:22 left in regulation time, then won the ensuing draw and fed Quast for a score just 11 seconds later to give Tiffin a 16-12 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan started its comeback when Lambert found Copeland for a score with 13:01 in regulation time.

The Bishops got a fortunate bounce when Tiffin keeper Jessica Oliver made a save, only to see the ball go straight to sophomore midfielder Natalie Fisher (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy), who scooped it up and scored on the putback to make it a 16-14 game with 10:03 to go.

Freshman midfielder Meredith Wholley (Brentwood, Tenn.) followed with a goal to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 16-15, and fortune smiled upon the Bishops again when Lambert's pass from behind the crease caromed off Oliver and into the net to tie the game at 16-16 with 7:17 left in regulation time.

Sophomore attacker Addie Bishop (Grand Rapids/Notre Dame Academy) then drove for an unassisted goal to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and junior midfielder Marlowe Mavian (Columbus/Wellington) converted a Copeland feed into a score less than a minute later to give the Bishops an 18-16 lead with 5:48 left in regulation time.

That goal proved important when Miller won the ensuing draw and found Saling for a goal 16 seconds later, bringing the Dragons within 18-17.

Tiffin had a golden opportunity to tie the game with less than 30 seconds left in regulation play when the Dragons cleared the ball down the right side, setting up Quast on a breakaway, but Figy made the save to preserve the lead, and Ohio Wesleyan was able to run out the clock.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early lead, breaking a 1-1 tie with a run of 5 straight goals that included 3 in a row by Copeland.

The Bishops still led, 11-9, on Mavian's goal with 1:02 left in regulation time, but Emily Miller hit Kelley Miller for a score with :50 remaining, then found the back of the net with :02 on the clock to even the game at 11-11 at the half.

Saling and senior midfielder Lauren Rogers (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) traded goals to open the second-half scoring, evening the game at 12-12.

Copeland finished with 4 goals and an assist for Ohio Wesleyan, while Lambert added 3 goals and 3 assists, and Rogers scored 3 goals. Figy stopped 10 shots in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.

Saling and Emily Miller scored 5 goals apiece for Tiffin, and Quast added 4 goals and 2 assists. Oliver finished with 15 saves for the Dragons.
