Queens Outgunned by Rollins in Second Half

Charlotte, N.C.- Brittany Barnwell scored five goals, caused five turnovers, and collected four ground balls in this evening's game against Rollins College. The Royals of Queens University of Charlotte fell to the Tars 21-12 in a game of two halves. With the loss, Queens falls to 3-6 overall (1-1 CC) while Rollins improves to 5-3.

The Royals came out in the first half ready to play, as they quickly jumped on the Tars to gain a 4-1 lead. After Katy Tyszko of the Tars scored the first goal of the game, Queens went on a scoring frenzy led by Kelley Duffey who ended the game with a hat trick. Rollins brought the Royals within one goal at 16:03 with a goal from Sarah Ann Showell.

Queens immediately answered netting two goals within a minute of each other to stretch the lead back out to three, 6-3. Barnwell scored the last goal of the half at 4:36 giving Queens an 8-6 advantage over the vistors. The Tars found some momentum to close the half going on a three-to-zero run against Queens to take the lead back at halftime, 9-8.

Queens opened up the half tying the game at 9-9 on Duffey's third unassisted goal of the game. She was soon followed by Barnwell's fourth goal of the game at 27:27. Rollins would soon go on another scoring run taking over control of the game at 13-10. Brittany Philip broke up the run with a goal assisted by Duffey after Coach Dennehy called a timeout to cool off the Tars. The Royals held Rollins from scoring for about two minutes before they went on a seven-to-zero run to seal the win.

Goal keeper Rebecca Markle recorded 18 saves tonight. Philip finished the game with two goals and three draw controls. Kristi Kemp tallied four ground balls and three draw controls.

Marissa Gianneri led Rollins with four goals and one assist. Erica Pagliarulo and Liz Connelly each netted three goals.

The Royals are back in action against Dowling University who is ranked eighth in the nation on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Queens Sports Complex.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 22, 2010) After trailing by as much as three goals in the first half, Rollins buckled down in the second as they outscored Queens University of Charlotte 12-4 in the final 30 minutes, trouncing the Royals with a final score of 21-12 on Sunday evening in Charlotte, N.C.

After scoring the first goal of the game, Rollins (5-3), fell behind and trailed for the majority of the first half. But Marissa Giannerini knotted the score at 8-8 with 29 seconds before the break, and ripped the go-ahead goal between the pipes just 18 seconds later off of a Liz Connelly feed to give the Tars a 9-8 advantage entering halftime.

The Royals (3-6) opened the second half to pull back to a one goal lead, but Rollins easily put them in their place as the Tars went on to dominate the half and win their first road contest of their 2010 campaign.

Rollins was led by Giannerini with four goals and an assist, followed by Mallory Surpless, Erica Pagliarulo, and Connelly who notched hat tricks on the evening. Connelly tallied a team high six points on the night as she added three assists to her total for six points overall.

Sarah Ann Showell, Katy Tyszko, and Sophie Townsend tallied two goals apiece, with Anna Townsend placed one ball between the pipes, and freshman Tricia Grant notched the first goal of her Rollins career late in the second half to round out the goal count.

Joining Connelly on the assists board were Tyszko with two, and Pagliarulo, Giannerini with one apiece.
