Forand Leads Bison by Daniel Webster for First Win of Year

DUDLEY, Mass. (March 22) Sophomore attacker Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) scored eight goals and added two assists to lead the Nichols College women's lacrosse team to a 22-5 victory over visiting Daniel Webster College Monday evening. Forand found the net six times and picked up the two helpers in the opening frame to erase an early Eagles lead. Nichols improves to 1-2 on the season, while Daniel Webster stands at 0-2.

Darcy Russell (Uncasville, Conn.) added four goals for the Bison, as did Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) in her collegiate debut. Shaughnessy netted her first collegiate goal just 1:01 after stepping on the field. Brittany Tremont (Guilford, Conn.) added three goals, and Lindsay Gustafson (Pepperell, Mass.) had two. Emily Yourie (Ellington, Conn.) scored a goal and assisted another.

Natalie Bates (N. Kingstown, R.I.) scored all five goals for the Eagles and led the team with four draw controls. She scored two on free position shots, including the first goal of the game at 1:24. She put the Eagles up, 2-0, less than two and a half minutes later, but Russell cut the lead in half with a free position shot at 7:33.

Bates edged the Eagles ahead again with her third of the night less than a minute later but Bison goals from Yourie and Forand just 22 seconds apart knotted the game at 9:49.

Daniel Webster took its last lead of the game at 10:15 on Bates's fourth goal, but Forand responded with three-straight unassisted scores to give Nichols a 6-4 lead with a little over six minutes left in the first half. Bates responded once more, but the Bison closed the stanza with nine unanswered tallies to hold a 15-5 advantage at the break.

The Bison outshot the Eagles, 24-9, in the first half, but in the second, sophomore goalkeeper Mary Michaud (Agawam, Mass.) made six saves to keep Daniel Webster off the board. Nichols, meanwhile, scored seven more, getting two each from Tremont, Russell and Forand, as well as one from Shaughnessy.

Michaud finished with nine saves, while Sarah Twardowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) made eight, including six in the first half.

Nichols converted on four of five free position shots, and was successful in 11 of 14 clear attempts. Daniel Webster won 16 draw controls to Nichols' 13, led by four each from Bates and Ashley Atkins (Amherst, N.H.).

The Bison get back into The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday when they host Salve Regina at Vendetti Field for a 7:00 p.m. game. Daniel Webster travels to Thomas (Maine) for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday.
