Fitchburg State Dominates Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (March 25, 2010) Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) registered a game-high seven points as Fitchburg State downed Saint Joseph's College (Conn.), 16-2 in non-conference action this evening.

Swan paced a Falcon 16-goal effort with a game-best seven points, including a team-high four goals and three assists. Sophomore Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) was just as strong, adding four goals and one helper to the mix, while sophomore Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) totaled four points with a hat-trick and one dish.

It was all Fitchburg State in the first half as the Falcons exploded for ten scores and held Saint Joseph's without a shot for the entire 30 minute period. Junior Connie Perry (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) put the Falcons on the board first with her fourth goal of the season, while Burns gave the Falcons an early 3-0 edge with back-to-back scores at the 22:08 mark.

Fitchburg State continued to cruise throughout the first half, totaling seven more scores for a 10-0 lead at the break. Burns led the Falcons first half shooting with four scores in the frame, while Finamore added a pair.

In the second half, Saint Joseph's mustered an early goal just 5:14 into the period but Fitchburg State broke out a five score tear to end any Blue Jay comeback. Swan lifted the Falcons with a trio of scores in the second period, while sophomore Gianna Gitto (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards) notched here first two scores of the season.

The Falcons controlled the offensive tempo from the get-go, rifling off 11 unanswered goals over the opening 35 minutes of play. Fitchburg State possessed a 26-7 advantage in shots (17-0 1st period), while totaling 12 groundballs and six caused turnovers. Junior Elizabeth Rubin (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) earned her third victory of the season, holding the Blue Jays silent over the first 30 minutes of work, while freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) added two stops over the second half.

Fitchburg State (3-2, 0-0 NEWLA) is off for the weekend and returns to action Tuesday as it travels to Elms College at 5:00 p.m. Saint Joseph's (0-2, 0-0 GNAC) will visit Pine Manor on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
