Monmouth Defeats Robert Morris in NEC Action

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. The Monmouth University lacrosse team defeated Robert Morris, 12-5 in Northeast Conference action on Friday afternoon at Kessler Field. The Hawks, winners of four straight, improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Colonials fall to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

With the contest knotted at 2-2, MU ended the half on a 3-0 scoring run, started when senior Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J. /Moorestown) scored on a free position for Monmouth to give the Hawks a one goal advantage with 5:56 left in the first half.

The hosts took a two-goal advantage less than five minutes later when senior Brittney McLaughlin scored, and she ended the half's scoring when she assisted on classmate Ali Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y. /Shaker) goal with 1:09 left. The Hawks dominated the shot category over the Colonials in the opening half, 19-5.

The Hawks continued their stellar play in the second half, outscoring the Colonials 7-3 after intermission. MU seized control of the contest with a 4-0 scoring spurt in the middle of the second half, paced by three goals in a row from Pollock, to push its advantage to 11-3.

The senior from upstate New York led the team with four goals, while Evans added two tallies, an assist, three ground balls and two ground controls. Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J. /West Essex) contributed two goals as well, adding four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman Kirstyn Urbas (Sewall, N.J. /Washington Township) added a goal, a pair of ground balls and a team-high six draw controls.

Reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md. /Seton Keough) made eight saves in goal to record the win. The Hawks outshot RMU 37-18 in the game, and also won 12 out of 19 draw controls. Ashley Trombetta led the Colonials with two goals in the contest.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Francis University at 1:00 pm.

West Long Branch, N.J. - March 26, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials suffered their first NEC loss of the season as they fell to the Monmouth Hawks in a 12-5 setback on Friday afternoon at Kessler Field. The loss drops the Colonials to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEC, while the Hawks improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Junior Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md./Century) led the team with two goals, with Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y./Old Dominion), Erin Finnegan (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) each chipping in one goal.

The first half started with the Hawks and the Colonials each trading free position goals within the first three minutes. Defense dominated the next 14 minutes of play as neither team was able to find the net. Finally with 12:52 left to play in the half, Carissa Franzi scored the Hawks second goal to grab the lead. RMU responded a little over a minute later when Finnegan beat Hawk goalie Kirby Mundorf on a free position shot to knot the score 2-2.

However, Monmouth went on a three goal run in the last nine minutes of play to earn a three goal advantage heading into the second half. Despite Monmouth outshooting the Colonials 19 to five in the first half, RMU played stellar defense throughout the first 30 minutes, holding the Hawks to just five goals.

The Hawks opened the second half in similar fashion to the end of the first and scored two goals within the first six minutes to take a 7-2 lead. At 12:02 Beck answered for the Colonials and scored an unassisted goal to close the gap to within four. However, Ali Pollock got into a groove for the Hawks and scored a trio of goals within four minutes, which was followed by another Hawk goal with five minutes left to play.
