Castleton Opens NAC Season with Win vs. Johnson State

Castleton, VT - Michael Martinez (Barrington, IL) and Samuel Bailey (Hartford, VT) each tallied four goals to lead Castleton State College to a 16-6 win over Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) mens lacrosse action Saturday at the Spartan Stadium. Castleton improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NAC, while Johnson State opens its season at 0-1, 0-1.

The Badgers struck first as Steve Noyes (Barre, VT) converted an unassisted tally with 10:48 remaining in the first period. Castleton answered with three-straight goals, one from Bailey and two from Martinez to grab a lead they would never relinquish. Billy Noyes (Boston, MA) cut the deficit to 3-2 for the Badgers, converting an Eric Tillberg (Randolph, VT) assist with 4:39 left in the opening period.

The score remained tight throughout the first period and early into the second, but after Alex Petti (East Greenwich, RI) cut the lead to 7-5 with 12:36 remaining in the first half, Castleton used a 9-0 run over the next 30 minutes of play to seal the win.

David DeGhetto (Clifton, NJ) stopped eight shots to earn the win in goal, anchoring a defensive effort that forced 43 Badger turnovers. Martinez also added two assists and 10 ground balls to his all-around performance to lead the Spartans. Craig MacDerment (Clifton Park, NY) controlled the face-off circle, winning 17 of 22 and grabbing nine ground balls to go with one goal.

Jake Rick (Rochester, NY) added two goals and one assist, while Korey Counos (St. Albans, VT) and Alexandre Brands (Woodstock, VT) each chipped in one goal and two assists. James Bascom (Barre, VT), Jeremy Peyton (Montpelier, VT) and Nohea King (St. Albans, VT) rounded out the Spartan scorers with one goal apiece.

Branden Sawyer (East Greenwich, RI) took the loss in goal, making 19 saves. Steve Noyes scored three goals and had one assist, while Billy Noyes scored two goals and had one assist to pace the Badger offense.

Castleton controlled possession for much of the contest, holding a 52-25 edge in shots and a 65-29 advantage in ground balls.

The Spartans return to action March 31 when they play host to Norwich University at 4:00 p.m. Johnson State hosts Husson on April 3 in a 1:00 p.m. NAC contest.
