Hartwick Drops Decision to Fredonia

ONEONTA, NY The Hartwick College women's lacrosse team held advantages in shots and ground balls on Saturday, but visiting Fredonia State came away with a 10-4 victory at Wright Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 4-3 while the Hawks slip to 1-3.

Hartwick was led by Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury) who scored twice. Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) contributed a goal and an assist and goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) stopped a season-high nine shots in cage.

Fredonia freshman Maddison Frink had a hand in seven of her team's 10 goals with four tallies and three assists, and Blue Devil goalkeeper Casey Chiesa made 10 saves on the day.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first 4:53 into the contest as LaVaute netted her seventh of the year for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils, however, would gain the upper hand scoring the next three goals in the next three minutes of play for a 3-1 edge.

'Wick would outshoot FSU 4-1 over the next 12 minutes but were unable to beat Chiesa to pull within a goal. Shots from Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and Bishop were saved and a pair of other Hartwick efforts were blocked before reaching the Fredonia cage.

Frink would score her second of the contest with 10 minutes left to play in the half, and Katie Monaghan extended the advantage 1:30 later for a 5-1 Fredonia lead. Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) set up Emily Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harbor Fields) as the Hawks stopped the Blue Devil run, and following an Amanda Zumbo tally, Bishop closed out the half's scoring on a free-position shot. The Hawks outshot the Devils 16-9 in the first half but still trailed 6-3 after the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, Fredonia struck twice in the first five minutes for an 8-3 lead. Hartwick cut the deficit to four with just over 11 minutes left as LaVaute found Bishop for her second goal of the game, but two tallies for the Devils in the final four minutes to put the game away.

The Hawks finished the game with a 25-22 edge in shots and a 24-22 margin in ground balls. Kaye led the Hawks in ground balls with five and Emily Piedigrossi (Cortland, NY/Cortland) added four. Scicchitano grabbed three draws with Bishop contributing two and a game-high three caused turnovers.

The Hawks are back in action next weekend as they open up Empire 8 play. 'Wick hosts Utica on April 2nd at 4:00 p.m. at Wright Stadium before entertaining Alfred on April 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
