Birlson Nets Six as Adrian Run by Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman attacker Stacey Birlson (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) scored six goals to help Adrian College defeat Washington & Jefferson College 19-5 in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The Bulldogs (5-2) jumped out to a 6-1 lead midway through the first half and broke the contest open with eight of the first 10 second-half tallies.

Birlson scored the first two goals and junior Andrea Soloko (Northville, Mich./Northville) and sophomore Amanda Lambert (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) followed with goals 1:23 apart for a quick 4-0 lead.

W&J (5-2) got on the scoreboard with 13 minutes remaining in the half following a goal by sophomore Liz Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School), but the Bulldogs netted four of the final five goals for an 8-2 halftime lead.

Birlson scored 11 seconds into the second half and Adrian piled up 10 more goals en route to the victory. Sophomore Rachel Johnston (St. Catherines, Ontario/Denis Morris) added four goals and three assists, while sophomore Lindsey Day (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) contributed two goals and four assists.

Sophomore goalie Laura Finfrock (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) made five saves for the Bulldogs, who outshot W&J by a 42-12 margin. Adrian also held a 27-16 ground ball advantage and forced 24 turnovers.

Junior attacker Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) led W&J with two goals, while sophomores Brittney Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and Joanne Chojecki (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Senior) recorded the other W&J goals.

Freshman goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) made 16 saves for the Presidents, including 12 in the second half.

The Presidents will attempt to win for the first time this season at Alexandre Stadium Wednesday when hosting Waynesburg at 4:00 pm. Dating back to last year, Washington & Jefferson has won nine-straight road games, but has dropped three of its last four home matches, including both in 2010.
