Wooster Hands No. 6 Denison First Loss of Season

The College of Wooster outscored the Big Red 3-2 in the fourth quarter and held off a late Big Red charge to earn a 12-11 upset over sixth-ranked Denison from John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio.

Denison entered the contest riding an 18-game winning streak versus the Fighting Scots but the two teams have had their share of nail-biters in recent years. Counting tonight's game, four of the last seven meetings between Denison and Wooster have been decided by one goal.

Tonight it was Wooster who came out on top thanks to four goals and the eventual game-winner from Pat Coyne with 5:26 left in the fourth quarter. Denison held a 3-2 lead late in the first quarter, but Coyne would strike for the second time with 1:13 left in the opening period to tie the game at 3-3.

That would spark a 4-0 run for the Fighting Scots that would last into the second quarter. Trailing 6-3, DU would go on a 4-0 run of their own thanks to goals by Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) and Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School).

Wooster would go on to close out the third quarter by scoring three of the final five goals to tie the match at 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, Wooster's Alex Mies scored first off an assist by Matt Pullara to go in front 10-9. Burton countered for Denison with his second goal of the game but the Fighting Scots broke the 10-10 tie with two straight goals over a four-minute span.

The Big Red were not going down without a fight as Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) cut the Wooster lead in half with a goal with 1:21 to play. Wooster won the ensuing face-off but Denison's Chris Koslowski (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) forced a turnover and the Big Red called a timeout to set up a final scoring attempt with 52 seconds left.

DU would run the clock down to the 14 second mark when Smith made his move the goal sending his shot attempt high.

Wooster outshot Denison 27-24 and was 1 for 3 in extra-man opportunities. The Scots did not commit a penalty over the 60 minutes of lacrosse so DU never had the chance to face their opponents with a man-down. Denison, who was playing without preseason All-American face-off specialist Connor Detjen (Winntka, Ill./Loyola Academy), lost 15 of 26 face-off's. Wooster's Pullara took all 26 face-off's and also added nine ground balls, one goal and two assists.

Denison was led in scoring by Smith who finished with three goals and one assist. Burton and Jones both scored twice. Cy Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School) and Smith paced Denison with four ground balls apiece.

Wooster goalie Corey McGann posted six saves in 60 minutes while Denison's Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) added four saves.

The Big Red drops to 4-1 on the year while Wooster improves to 4-4. Denison will look to get back on track next Saturday (April 3) when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
