Vermont Falls to Albany in America East Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Kayla Best scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Albany Great Danes to an 18-5 victory over Vermont in the America East opener for both teams at Moulton Winder Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Albany improves to 7-1 overall and moves to 1-0 in America East. Vermont falls to 2-6 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

The Great Danes rolled out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes of action and never looked back. Vermont cut the lead to two on back-to-back 8-meter shots by Alison Haigh (Northborough, Mass.) and Allison Pfhol (Niskayuna, N.Y.). Albany scored five of the next seven goals to take a 9-4 advantage at the half.

In the second half, the Great Danes limited UVM to just four shots on goal and outscored the Catamounts 9-1 in the frame. Albany finished the game with a 31-15 advantage in shots.

Amanda Pollock and Olivia Jarem added four goals each for Albany, while Christine Grueniger led the Great Danes with three assists. Junior Megan MacDonald (Wayland, Mass.) led the Catamounts with a goal and an assist.

Laura Barber (Middlebury, Vt.) was credited with seven saves for Vermont, while Ashley Ross, the reigning America East Defender of the Week, made six stops for Albany.

Vermont returns to action on Saturday (April 3) when it travels to Stony Brook for a 1:00 p.m. America East Conference game.

Game Notes: America East Players of the Game: Kayla Best (Albany), Megan MacDonald (Vermont). UVM's Samantha Stern scored one goal in the game and has scored 10 goals in the last five contests.
