No. 20 Bowdoin Dominates Southern Maine

PORTLAND, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team dominated from the opening draw in a 21-6 win over the University of Southern Maine in a game played at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Wednesday night. The 20th-ranked Polar Bears have won three-straight games and improve to 4-3 this season with the victory.

A trio of Polar Bears posted hat tricks, as Elizabeth Clegg, Caroline McNamara and Chelsea Albright all found the back of the cage three times. Katie Herter had two goals and an assist for Bowdoin while Katie Stewart and Carolyn Gorajek also had a pair of tallies. Mary Vaughan led the Huskies with three goals.

Bowdoin led 12-1 at the break and coasted in the second half. Tara Connolly played the first half and was not credited with save before giving way to Alexandra Brown (two saves) in the second period.

The Polar Bears improve to 12-0 all-time against the Huskies and have averaged 21 goals/game against Southern Maine over the last three years.

PORTLAND, Maine -- The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals of the game and cruised to an easy 21-9 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The win was the third straight for the Polar Bears and improves their overall record to 4-3. The Huskies dropped their second straight contest to fall back to .500 at 3-3.

Sophomores Elizabeth Clegg (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy), Caroline McNamara (Needham, Mass.), and Celeste Albright (East Lyme, Conn.) led the Bowdoin offense with three goals apiece. Sophomore Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass./Brooks School) had thee points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, Md./Sidwell Friends) and first-years Carolyn Gorajek (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) and Helen Conaghan (Bethesda, Md./National Cathedral) each added two goals.

For USM, junior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) found the net three times. Rookie Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) added two goals, and junior Kristy Kendrick (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) contributed a goal and an assist.

Herter, Stewart and Gorajek scored in the opening six-and-a-half minutes to take the visitors to an early 3-0 lead. Clegg singlehandedly doubled the advantage scoring three goals in a span of 2:29. The lead grew to 10-0 before Vaughan scored with 6:51 to go on the half after intercepting a pass and making a solo run down field.

The teams traded goals through the first 22 minutes of the second half before the Polar Bears went on a 5-1 run over the final eight minutes.

Southern Maine visits the University of New England on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). Bowdoin seeks to extend its win streak traveling to Connecticut College on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
