Manhattanville Drops Decision to DeSales

CENTER VALLY, Pa. Despite three goals from freshman Matt Corey (Merrimack, N.H.) and 15 saves by senior netminder Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), the Manhattanville men's lacrosse team fell to DeSales University in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Thursday afternoon.

The Valiant offense was held to a single goal in the first half and was resurrected in the second half, scoring six times, but DeSales scored early and took a 4-1 lead heading into the half. Even thought the Valiants outscored the Bulldogs 6-5 in the second half, DeSales outshot the Valiants, 17-11, in the final frame.

Manhattanville got scoring contributions from two other players in the game besides Corey, as seniors Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Matt Hanley (Milton, Mass.) scored twice for the Valiants, while Hasbrouck also helped the team with an assist along with one helper from sophomore Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y.).

The Bulldogs scored the first two goals of the contest before Hanley netted the team's only goal of the half with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter. DeSales outshot the visiting team 10-8 in the first quarter and then tacked on two more goals in the second quarter as both squads finished with eight shots apiece.

DeSales was determined to keep the lead in the second half, when they scored a quick goal to start the third quarter. Manhattanville answered back hitting the back of the next three consecutive times on goals from Corey (twice) and Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck's goal was the only man-up goal scored by the Valiants on the afternoon.

With helpers from Daly and Hasbrouck on two of the three goals, the Valiants trailed by one goal, 5-4, until DeSales ripped three shots past Predun in a span of three minutes to finish out the third quarter leading 8-4.

DeSales upped its lead to 9-4 midway into the final period. The Valiants made it an interesting contest late into the period, scoring three times, but trailed by too many with not enough time left. Corey's third goal of the game came with 6:39 remaining, while Hasbrouck needed just one minute to net his second of the night as the Valiants looked to have a second wind with 5:38 remaining. Hanley finished the scoring rally with 3:46 left, but the Valiants weren't able to get another shot on goal the rest of the way.

Predun's 15 saves held the team in order, making a majority of his saves in the first half before settling down his defensive unit and needing to make only six saves the rest of the way. DeSales' netminder Justin Campanelli made five saves, but could not make a save in the first and last quarter as the Valiants went perfect 4 of 4 in shots on goal.

The Valiant defense held the Bulldogs to only one of six with man-up opportunities and forced 23 turnovers.

Manhattanville (3-5, 2-1 MAC) will remain on the road for a meeting with King's (Pa.) College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. DeSales (3-5, 2-1 MAC) will travel to Eastern on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. faceoff.
