University of New England Pulls Away from Salve Regina

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Danielle Cate (Boscawen, N.H.) scored nine goals and classmate Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) made 18 saves as the University of New England pulled away in the second half to a 22-12 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Salve Regina University in women's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon from Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Cate's nine tallies broke the school's single-game goal record of eight, which had been shared by 2002 graduate Hope Lavigne and 2008 graduate Ashley MacDonald.

Winners of four straight contests, the Nor'easters improve to 5-1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. The loss drops the Seahawks to 1-5 on the season (0-3 TCCC).

Senior Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine) chipped in with five scores for UNE, while sophomore Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) added three markers.

Geraghty, who played the final 50 minutes in goal, made 11 second-half stops to post her season-high save total and pick up the win.

Junior Nicole Viola (Scarborough, Maine) led Salve with three goals -- all of which came in the opening 7:43 of the match. Senior Sarah Baker (Summit, N.J.) and first-year Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) each recorded a pair of scores.

Trailing 3-1 just over four minutes into the contest, the Seahawks notched three consecutive scores to grab their only lead of the game (4-3) with 20:45 to play in the opening frame.

The advantage lasted all of 20 seconds as Cate struck off a feed from sophomore Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.), sparking a three-goal spurt that put the Nor'easters up 6-4 midway through the period.

UNE's cushion was sliced to one (8-7) as halftime neared, but that would be as close as Salve would get the rest of the way.

Big Blue tacked on the final two goals of the first half and four of the initial five scores in the second to gain control of the match down the stretch.

The Nor'easters return to action Saturday when they host the University of Southern Maine at noon.

Sophomore goalie Natalie Balletta registered 11 saves for the Seahawks, who travel to the University of Massachsetts Dartmouth Tuesday.
