Vassar Edged in Exciting Shootout by William Smith

Vassar grabbed the momentum over the next nine minutes, outscoring William Smith 7-1 to take an 8-6 lead. Warner scored four times during the stretch. Herons Fitzgerald and Scheibel answered the run with consecutive tallies to tie the game at 8-all, followed by Warner and Fitzgerald trading goals to make the score 10-all at halftime.

William Smith scored three straight to start the second stanza, thanks to two from Potter and a free-position goal from Fitzgerald. The Herons led 13-10 with 26:21 remaining.

Byrne tallied the final three goals for the Brewers. She netted two in a row to cut the Brewers' deficit to one, 13-12, with 22:53 to go, but Potter answered to put the visitors back up by two. With 15:17 to play, Byrne again cut the lead to one, but the Herons would not allow Vassar tie. Junior Cassie Findlay scored the final goal of the day for William Smith with less than four minutes on the clock.

The Herons held a 45-30 advantage in shots, a 44-27 edge in ground balls, and a 17-11 lead in draw controls.

William Smith first-year goalie Jesse Wilson collected eight saves in the win, while Nicole Englehardt stopped 20 shots for the hosts, including 11 in the second half.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, April 3, when they take on Rensselaer in another Liberty League game at 2:00 p.m.
