Roanoke Sweeps Past Sweet Briar for ODAC Victory

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Roanoke outscored Sweet Briar, 12-1 in the second half en route to a 22-4 road victory Friday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 4-5 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC. The Vixens dropped to 2-9, 1-4 in conference play.

Roanoke posted season-bests of 22 goals, 12 assists, 52 shots, 37 shots on goal, 27 groundballs, 20 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers in the win. The Maroons were also successful in all 12 clear attempts this afternoon.

Gina Valles led the Maroons with five goals and a season-best three assists for eight points on the day. Valles passed Hall of Famer, Lisa Franzino '97 for fourth on the all-time scoring list (227 points) and third in career shots with 363. She also passed Robin Collinson '91 for third in career goals with 178. She needs one more free-position goal to tie another Hall of Famer, Lindsay Wernert '99 for third on the all-time list with 35. With her assists this afternoon, Valles moved into 10th on the career assists list with 49.

Carolyn Miller finished with career highs of seven points and five assists along with two goals. Mary Kate Cummings had a season-high three goals for the second time this season with one assist, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Meegan Rourke completed a hat trick with three goals, but was outstanding defensively. She totaled a team and season-best five groundballs, three draw controls and a season-high four caused turnovers. Elizabeth Hartge added a career-high four caused turnovers with two groundballs.

Paige Mason had a game-high five draw controls with two goals and an assist. She moved into 12th on the all-time scoring list with 159 career points, just three shy of 10th on that list. She needs one more assist to tie for eighth on that list with 63. She is now tied with teammate, Gina Valles, for second on the all-time draw controls list with 120. She is also now 10th on the career shots list with 239.

Others that had solid outings were Sunni Ray, with her best game of the season with two goals and an assist. She is only seven points shy of becoming the 29th member of the 100-point club at Roanoke. Jamie Golden had a goal and an assist. Elizabeth Narwicz and Kathleen Wager each scored their first goals of the season while Cristen Sanfilippo and Brooks Laufman added a goal apiece. Sanfilippo is now sixth on the career draw controls list with 98. Alida Haslett's two caused turnovers today puts her four shy of breaking the school-record.

Laura Zdziarski (2-2) won her second career game between the pipes for Roanoke with two saves. Cristina Schicilone and Casey Esloon also had a save for the Maroons in goal.

The women return to action on Tuesday, April 6 as they host Randolph-Macon in ODAC action. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
