No. 1 C.W. Post Holds off No. 7 NYIT in ECC Match

Old Westbury, NY (April 3, 2010) C.W. Post's Nick Coric scored with just over 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to snap a 9-9 tie and give the Pioneers the lead for good, as they held on to defeat the NYIT men's lacrosse team 13-11 this afternoon in East Coast Conference action. The loss drops the Bears to 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in the league, while the Pioneers improve to 10-0 and 5-0 in the conference.

The Pioneers grabbed a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter on a James Johnston score, but the Bears countered with three consecutive goals. Senior Mike Palmer (Westbury, NY) netted the first of his two scores at the 3:15 mark, senior Kevin Hennessy (West Babylon, NY) scored with no time on the clock to close out the first quarter and tie the score at 3-3, and Palmer opened the second quarter with this second of the day to give the Bears a 4-3 lead. The two teams would trade goals the rest of the quarter and head into the half with the score tied at 6-6.

Senior Austin Carino's (Huntington, NY) goal :44 seconds into the third quarter gave NYIT a 7-6 lead, but the Pioneers responded with three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth. Carino and senior Bryan Gil (Holbrook, NY) opened the final period of play with scores just over :30 seconds apart to tie the score at 9-9, but Coric struck with his score at the 11:14 mark.

Mike Messina gave the Pioneers some breathing room as he picked off a pass on a clear attempt and had a clear path to net, scoring with 9:58 remaining to make it an 11-9 lead. Senior Derek O'Haire (Floral Park, NY) pulled NYIT to within 10-9 on a feed from senior Keith Clancy (Pine Bush, NY), but neither team would score for the next seven minutes, until the Pioneers Doug Hoch found the back of the net to push the advantage back to 12-10 with 2:46 to play.

The Pioneers held a slight advantage in groundballs, picking up 38 to the Bears 35, and face offs, winning 14-25. NYIT did capitalize on Pioneer penalties, converting four of the seven man-up opportunities. The Bears committed 24 turnovers on the day.

NYIT returns to action next Saturday at Dominican College at 1:00 p.m.
