No. 3 Hamilton Explodes in Second Half to Down Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2010) Leading by just two goals at halftime, the No. 3 nationally ranked Hamilton College women's lacrosse team exploded for 12 second half goals and defeated a scrappy Vassar College team 16-5, at Weinberg Field.

The Brewers drop to 4-4, 0-2 on the season and will travel to Union College on April 9 for a 4:00 p.m. game. The Continentals improve to 8-0, 2-0 and will host St. Lawrence next on April 9 at 4:00 p.m. Vassar battled Hamilton to a 4-2 intermission score, and had drawn to within a goal at 4-3, following a tally by senior midfielder Liz Pacheco with 2:58 remaining in the first half.

Coming out of intermission, the Continentals turned up the pressure considerably, forcing Vassar into 13 turnovers and holding a decided 12-3 advantage in draw controls in the final 30 minutes and 17-5 for the game.

Hamilton scored the first two goals of the second half for a 6-2 lead before Vassar freshman Michaela Garrison tallied her ninth goal of the season, cutting the margin to 6-3. With Hamilton leading 7-4, the Continentals ratcheted up the pressure, controlled the ball and scored eight straight goals to take a commanding 15-4 lead.

Vassar junior goalie Nichole Engelhardt was stellar in goals, making 16 saves against considerable offensive pressure from Hamilton which had 45 shots in the game.

Vassar got two goals from junior Allie Morgan and a goal and assist from Pacheco.

Hamilton had balanced scoring, with nine different players scoring at least one goal. Sophomore attack Libby Schultz and junior attack Aubrey Nebergall each had two goals, with Schultz contributing with two assists. Hamilton senior goalie Katie Fowler had eight saves in the game.
