Amherst Keeps Rolling with Road Victory at Bates

LEWISTON, ME - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team increased its winning streak to three games with a 13-7 victory at Bates this afternoon in NESCAC play. The Lord Jeffs carried a 7-5 lead into halftime and dominated the second half to improve to 3-3 overall (2-2 NESCAC), while Bates falls to 4-4 (0-4) on the year.

Just two minutes into the first quarter, Amherst sophomore Dan Routh (Allendale, NJ) scored an unassisted goal to open up the game. Less than two minutes later, Bates tied the game on Jason Hichborn's sixth goal of the season, late in a man-up session. With 8:53 remaining in the first, Evan Bagley put the Bobcats up by a 2-1 lead, which would stand as the last Bates lead of the day.

Amherst scored a trio of goals on different situations to re-gain the lead, 4-2. Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) scored during the run of play with 8:26 remaining off a feed from Matt Levine (Niskalyuna, NY), before senior Matt Kellman (Wilton, CT) scored a rare man-down goal. With 1:42 to play in the opening stanza, senior Rob Denious (Bloomfield Hills, MI) scored a man-up goal off a Routh assist. Bates tacked on the final tally of the first period on Rory Cosgrove's seventh goal of the season.

Amherst's Alex Fox (Garden City, NY) scored his only two goals of the game early in the second quarter, before Cosgrove scored again for Bates. Senior Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) has his first goal of the night to put Amherst up 7-4 with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, but Kevin Helm answered for Bates with just nine seconds to play before half. The Helm score, his first of the season, closed the gap to 7-5 heading into the break.

Just 58 seconds into the third stanza, Nick Sampson finished off an assist from Bagley to close the gap to one goal, but from there it was all Amherst. Cherney scored his second goal of the game with 8:56 remaining in the third period, and then Routh score his second and third goals of the game on either side of a natural hat trick from McDonnell. McDonnell's goals with 6:49 and 3:42 remaining in the third, and then 5:58 to play in the fourth helped Amherst stretch its lead from 9-6, to 12-6 and seal the win.

McDonnell led all players with four goals and an assist in the win. Kellman dished out four helpers in the game, while Routh had a trio of scores and an assist for four points of his own. Both Fox and Cherney had a pair of goals in the win as well. Bates was paced offensively by a pair of goals from each Cosgrove and Nick Sampson.

Amherst goalie Sam Jakimo made 12 huge saves in the win, improving his record to 3-0 since returning from an illness to start the season. Adam Scharff and Alex Henrie made five saves apiece for Bates in the loss.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. game at Middlebury.
