Washington & Jefferson Falls One Goal Short of OWU

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Jessica Copeland broke at 6-6 tie with 8:12 remaining and Ohio Wesleyan ran out a majority of the remaining clock to earn a 7-6 women's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.

The Battling Bishops (5-3) controlled the ball for nearly all of the final five minutes and did not allow W&J to attempt a shot in the final eight minutes.

W&J (6-3) raced out to a 3-1 lead midway through the first half after two goals from junior Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and another from freshman midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands).

OWU answered with three goals during a two-minute span to grab a 4-3 lead, but Schrock found the back of the net 21 seconds before halftime to force a 4-4 tie.

Sophomore Joanne Chojecki (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Senior) put the Presidents in front 5-4 eight minutes into the second half, but OWU responded with goals from Kelsey Countryman and Dani Beauford for a 6-5 lead with 12:31 left on the clock. Washington & Jefferson forced the fifth tie of the match at the 8:33 mark on a free-position goal from sophomore defender Brittney Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery), but Copeland answered just 19 seconds later with the game's final goal.

Beauford led the Battling Bishops with three goals. Lauren Figy was the winning goaltender. She totaled six saves. OWU held advantages in shots (19-13) and draw controls (8-7). The Battling Bishop defense also forced 22 turnovers.

Schrock paced W&J with three goals, while freshman Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) made seven of her 10 saves in the first half. W&J scored on 3 of 6 free position shots.

The Presidents will now embark on a five-game road trip starting Wednesday evening at Allegheny (7:00 pm).
