Anderson, Cantwell Propel Rutgers Past Connecticut

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 3, 2010) Senior attacker Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) and junior midfielder Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) each scored three goals to lead the Rutgers women's lacrosse team (7-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) in a 15-10 victory over Connecticut (7-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the RU Turf Field.

Sophomore midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) set the Rutgers record for the most draw controls in a single game, posting 10 in the Scarlet Knights' first BIG EAST win of the season. Steinberg eclipsed the previous school record of eight, established by Jaime Whitlock (1996-99) against Saint Joseph's on April 4, 1998.

Rutgers got out to a 5-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game with Cantwell finding the back of the net twice. Senior midfielder Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.) scored the game's first goal at the 26:54 mark, followed by a tally from junior midfielder Jennifer Schmitt (Baltimore, Md.), back-to-back goals from Cantwell and a goal from Anderson with 18:22 remaining.

The Huskies rallied to tie the game at 5-5, scoring five straight to close out the first half.

The Scarlet Knights found their go-ahead goal at the start of the second half to manage a 6-5 lead. Sophomore attacker Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) posted her second assist of the game as she connected on a pass to Schmitt for her second goal of the game.

Connecticut responded with back-to-back goals to take over the advantage at 7-6, however, it was short-lived as the Scarlet Knights ripped off four-straight goals to pull ahead for good (10-7).

UConn managed to get within two points (10-8) with a Lauren Sparks goal, but the Scarlet Knights out-scored the Huskies 5-2 over the final 15:36 to earn the 15-10 victory.

Cantwell led RU with a game-high six points as she also chipped in three assists to go with her three goals. McGinley finished the contest with two goals and two assists, while Schmitt and junior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) added two goals apiece.

Rutgers will play its second of two consecutive home games when it hosts Monmouth on Wednesday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m.
