No. 16 Mary Washington Tops Guilford for 8th Victory

Senior attacker Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn., Joel Barlow) scored five goals, and sophomore Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) and Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) each added four scores to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 victory over Guilford College on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve 8-3 on the season.

The game action started fast and furious, as the score stood tied at three just over six minutes into play. But the Eagles scored the next six goals of the game to take control at 9-3. Butler and Kennedy each scored twice and Callison and Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) each scored once. After three Guilford goals, the Eagles scored two of the last three goals of the half to lead, 11-7, at intermission.

UMW scored the first four goals of the second half to take a 15-7 lead, but Guilford responded with three scores to move the score to 15-10 with 8:38 to play. Freshman Julie Frase (Preston, Md., Gunston Day) scored once and assisted on another to Wallis, and Kennedy capped the scoring in the final minute, giving the Eagles a six-goal win.

Mary Washington led in shots, 49-24, and in ground balls, 36-27. UMW won 18 of 32 draw controls, led by five from sophomore Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire). Sophomore Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga., Walton) made three saves in the first half and Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) made six in the second frame for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will host Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Brittany Butler scored five goals in the University of Mary Washington's 18-12 lacrosse win over Guilford College Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles (8-3) are ranked 16th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Poll.

Guilford slips to 5-6 with its third straight setback.

Catherine Kennedy had four goals and two assists for the Eagles, including three first-half scores that helped the hosts to an 11-7 halftime lead.

Lauren Callison also scored four times for Mary Washington. She had two goals in the 4-0 run that opened the second half and a 15-7 Eagles' lead.

Guilford scored five of the game's next six goals, including three by Summer Frazier, which made it a 16-12 game with 6:26 remaining. Katie Wallis ended the rally by scoring her third goal of the game with 2:33 left.

Allie Kimmelman had five points on a goal and four assists, plus a game-high 10 ground balls for Mary Washington. Kathryn Stiltz and Leigh Ann Redefer both played a half in goal, with Redefer recorded six of her team's saves in the second half. The Eagles outshot Guilford, 49-24.

Frazier's four goals paced Guilford's offense. Sarah Bradburd added a season-high four points with three goals and an assist. Ellie Merritt tallied twice for the Quakers. Teammate Alyzza-May Callahan had 15 saves and six ground balls in goal.

Guilford is back in action next Sunday (4/11) against the University of the South at 12 noon in the Armfield Athletic Center.
