Nazareth Defeats St. John Fisher in Empire 8 Play

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Michelle Cook (Waterloo) and freshman Alyssa Johnston (Canandaigua) each scored four goals for host Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers recorded their first Empire 8 Conference win in women's lacrosse with a 16-9 triumph over St. John Fisher.

Nazareth never trailed in the game as the Golden Flyers improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. Fisher fell to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The victory was Nazareth 12th against Fisher in 13 meetings.

Nazareth scored the first four goals of the game and six of the first seven to take control early. Freshman Megan Cregan (Brighton) won the opening draw control and raced down the field and score unassisted just nine seconds into the game for the Golden Flyers. Junior Jennifer Young (Marcellus, NY) scored exactly two minutes after that to give Nazareth a 2-0 advantage. Cook followed with a pair of unassisted scores to extend the lead to 4-0.

After Fisher scored, junior Kristine Olijnyk (Webster Thomas) and Johnston followed with goals to make the score 6-1. The Cardinals countered with three straight goals to close within 6-4, but that was as close as Fisher would get as Nazareth scored three more times before the first half ended to make the score 9-4 at the break. Johnston scored twice in that stretch and senior Stephanie Cash (Saratoga Springs) contributed an unassisted score with 1:09 left in the half.

Cook and Young each scored twice for the Golden Flyers in the second half as the lead continued to grow. Johnston also had a goal as did freshman Erinn Wood (Vestal, NY) and senior Alyssia Roberts (Marcus Whitman/Stanley, NY).

Nazareth had advantages in shots (43-32), ground balls (19-17) and draw controls (18-9). Cook won four draws and defender Melissa Cignarale (Rome, NY) and senior Nora Davis (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, NY) each had three ground balls.

Nazareth goalie Ann Sessler (Cazenovia, NY) made 15 saves while Vicki Sahm (Bishop Ludden/Baldwinsville, NY) had 19 for Fisher. Lauren Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse, NY) scored four goals for the Cardinals and Ashley Fenyn (Newark/Newark, NY) had two goals and one assist.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule this weekend with road games at Alfred Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Utica Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
