Southern Maine Falls to No. 20 Bates

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack that featured 11 players scoring goals en route to a 15-5 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.

The win was the second straight for the Bobcats who get back to .500 at 4-4. The Huskies dipped below the .500 mark and are now 4-5.

Sophomores Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.), Maggie Reilly (Wellesley, Mass.), Lindsay Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) and Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) paced the Bobcats offense with two goals apiece. O'Neill also had two assists to finish with a game-high four points. Senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) dished out three assists, and senior Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) contributed a goal and two assists.

Senior Jess Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) had two goals for Southern Maine. Junior Jess Martineau (Yarmouth, Maine), sophomore Abby Weeks (Brunswick, Maine) and freshman Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) each scored a goal for USM.

For Bates, junior Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.), sophomore Leah Elsmore (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and rookie Eloise O'Connor (Loudonville, N.Y.) each took a turn in goal. Krueger started and registered five saves in 38 minutes. Elsmore did not record a save in 17 minutes while O'Connor had one stop in the final five minutes. USM rookie goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) went the distance and was credited with 17 saves.

Southern Maine hung close through the opening 16 minutes before Bates went on a 5-0 run to end the first half with a 7-2 advantage. O'Neill scored both of her goals, and dished out an assist, over the final 14 minutes of the half.

The Bobcats got the first goal of the second half from sophomore Caroline Pierce (Weston, Mass.) to extend their string of unanswered goals to six. Knight finally snapped the run of Bobcat goals with 20:36 remaining. The Bobcats would get the next five goals, from five different players, over the next eight minutes to take command.

Southern Maine opens its 2010 Little East Conference schedule on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Western Connecticut State University. Bates returns to NESCAC on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Connecticut College.
