Hartwick Drops Empire 8 Contest to Stevens

ONEONTA, NY Visiting Stevens scored eight of the game's last nine goals to pull away from Hartwick's men's lacrosse team on Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The Ducks led by a 12-8 margin in the fourth quarter but the late surge handed them a 20-9 victory. The loss drops Hartwick's overall record to 3-5. The Ducks, who are just out of the national top 20 in the "receiving votes" category, improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8.

Hartwick got two goals each from senior Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and sophomore Ian Putnam (N. Pomfret, VT/Proctor). Junior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/N. Massapequa), who ranked in the top three in the conference in assists entering the game, scored a goal and dished out another six helpers. Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), Tom Srubinski (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Matt Landry (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), and Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) each tallied once for the Hawks.

Brandon Faubert (4g, 3a), Alex Couture (4g, 2a), Blair Koontz (4g, 1a), and Alex Hofrichter (3g) did much of the damage for the Ducks combining for 15 goals and six assists.

Aitchison gave Hartwick a quick 1-0 lead over the Ducks in the opening two and a half minutes of action. The Ducks evened the score at the 9:18 mark and took a three-goal lead into the second quarter thanks to three consecutive tallies in the last four minutes of the period. Stevens made it 5-1 after a man-up strike in the early going of the second quarter, but Aitchison set up both Wilk and Putnam to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 10:54 left in the half.

Stevens would rebuild its lead scoring three straight, including two from Faubert 20 seconds apart. Putnam and Wilk answered in the final three minutes for Hartwick and the Hawks trailed by a score of 9-5 at the end of 30 minutes.

Two scores in the first minute of the third period extended the visitors' lead but man-up goals from Wilk and Putnam shaved the lead to four deep into the period. Faubert's third of the day with 51 ticks left gave the Ducks a 12-7 edge heading into the final period.

Aitchison set up Srubinski in front of the Stevens' goal for the Hawks' eighth tally 28 seconds into the fourth. The Hawks drew a Stevens penalty and had a chance to pull to within three goals as they fired four shots at the Duck cage. Three of the four shots were off target, however, and goalie Dave Decker made a save on the other to keep the lead at four.

Blair Koontz tallied with 10 minutes to go to spark a four-goal Stevens run in a 1:46 span. Cassidy's goal with seven minutes left made it 16-7 but four tallies for the Ducks in the final seven minutes closed out the win.

Stevens outshot the Hawks 41-38 in the game and held a 44-33 advantage in ground balls. Bobby Steinhauser grabbed a game-high nine ground balls for the Ducks and Taylor Brown added seven.

Kevin Miller (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) nabbed seven ground balls to lead Hartwick. Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) contributed five ground balls and Max Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) added four. Skvarch and Cooper both tied for a game-high three caused turnovers.

Decker closed out the game with 12 saves in the Duck cage. Ryan Twardowski (Emmaus, PA/S. Lehigh) made eight saves for 'Wick.

Hartwick hits the road on Saturday for its next Empire 8 contest. The hawks play 11th ranked Nazareth in Rochester at 1:00 p.m.
