Washington & Jefferson Wins First-Ever vs. Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson jumped out to an 8-4 halftime lead and recorded its first-ever win over Allegheny following an 11-7 victory Wednesday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

The Presidents (7-3), who had allowed 41 goals to the Gators (3-6) over the past two seasons, limited AC to only 22 shot attempts, six of which were saved by freshman goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville).

W&J scored five of the match's first six goals, including a pair three minutes into the game by junior attacker Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West). The Gators netted back-to-back goals six minutes apart, but W&J responded with goals from sophomores Shannon Novak (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Brittney Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and freshman Kelsey Kraus (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands).

Allegheny made it a 6-4 game 11 minutes before halftime, but a four-goal spurt between the final nine minutes of the first half and the first 13 minutes of the second half put the Presidents ahead 10-4. Schrock, Oake, sophomore Joanne Chojecki (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Senior) and freshman Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's SFG) all found the back of the net.

The Gators used a late run to bring the final score to a four-goal margin.

Schrock fired in four goals and added one assist to lead the W&J attack. Kraus also assisted on one goal and Sophomore defender Cayla Grodotzke (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) grabbed a game-high four draw controls which helped W&J earn an 11-8 overall edge.

The Presidents outshot the Gators by a 25-22 margin and used a 20-18 ground ball advantage. Six different Gators scored led by Elissa Gordon's two-goal effort.

W&J looks to up its 2010 road record to 7-0 Saturday when traveling to Saint Vincent for a 2:00 pm game.
