Rutgers Cruises Past Local Foe Monmouth

The Scarlet Knights will return to BIG EAST play when they begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday, April 13, at Villanova at 7:30 p.m.

PISCATAWAY, N.J.- Monmouth University's (5-8) women's lacrosse team suffered its worst defeat of the 2010 season to BIG EAST rival Rutgers University (8-3) on Wednesday night in Piscataway.

Rachel Feirstein (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored just 55 seconds into the match to give MU a 1-0 lead but the Scarlet Knights answered with a pair of goals. Captain Megan Brennan (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) knotted the game at 2-2 with her first of two goals on the night, but Rutgers would outscore the Hawks 7-1 over the final 17 minutes of the half.

The Scarlet Knights, who were ranked 20th in the country just last week, rolled during the second half, scoring 10 goals while the Hawks got markers from Brennan, Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex).

Junior goaltender Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keogh) made five saves as the Hawks were outshot 31-11 in the match. Freshman Emma Taylor (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brother's Academy) played over seven minutes in the match, allowing zero goals but also making no saves. Junior Molly O'Brien (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) had a goal and a pair of assists for the Hawks.

MU is now 0-8 all-time against its Garden State rival. Rutgers was paced by Kristen Anderson who had two goals and three assists. Rutgers played three different goaltenders in the contest.

Monmouth returns home for a pair of weekend games, starting with Bryant on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
