Greensboro Fights off Whittier Rally for One-Goal Victory
Greensboro, NC – Randy Brooks (Greensboro, NC/Southeast Guilford) scored four goals and Alex Haskins (Ballston Spa, NY/Herkimer C.C.) made 15 saves as Greensboro College defeated Whittier College, 12-11, at Pride Field. In a battle of two the NCAA Division III Independents, The Pride improved to 9-3 and the Poets dropped to 7-4.
Greensboro held a 4-1 advantage after the first period and led 8-4 at halftime. The Pride moved the advantage to 12-5 late in the third quarter before Whittier put on a furious rally.
Trailing 12-6 entering the final period, The Poets out-shot GC 17-2 in the final 15 minutes. WC out-scored The Pride 4-0 in the last quarter and cut the deficit with 36 seconds after a goal by Christian Wright.
Skip Jakupi (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) won the ensuing face-off. He won 19-24 draws on the day. Haskins made his final save of the day on a shot by Mitch Prickett with 16 seconds on the clock.
Whittier led in shots 42-29. Sam Russell had two goals and six assists to pace the Poets.
Nick Patrone (Supply, NC/Apex) added three goals for GC. Both Jordan Drumheller (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and John Anglin dished three assists for the home team.
The Pride hosts Lynchburg on April 14.
