Vassar Falls to No. 13-Ranked Union in Liberty Action

SCHENECTADY, NY (April 9, 2010) A powerful Union College women's lacrosse team scored five goals in the first 7:33 of the game and limited the Brewers to a season-low two goals, en route to a 16-3 Liberty League victory on Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.

The Brewers drop to 4-5, 0-3 and will travel to Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. Liberty League game. Union, which is ranked No. 13 nationally in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll, improves to 4-4, 2-0 and will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Bend a furious offensive performance by senior attack Jill LaForest, who scored six first half goals and had seven in the game, the Dutchwomen led 12-0 at intermission. Union senior attack Kristin Joyce tallied four goals in the opening stanza for the Dutchwomen, who had 25 of their 33 shots in the first 30 minutes of action against junior goalie Nicole Engelhardt, who made eight saves. Sophomore Heather Kessleman played the second half in goal for Vassar, allowing four goals and making three saves.

Against a Union defense that tops the Liberty League in goals against average at 7.96 per game and in goalie saves (12.86 per game), the Brewers managed couldn't muster enough offense to challenge the Dutchwomen.

Vassar had only four shots in the first half and ten for the game. The Brewers avoided a shutout when junior when junior attack Moe Byrne tallied her 15th goal of the season at the 28:12 mark of the second half. Junior midfielder Sarah Warner, the Liberty League's third leading scorer, tallied her 28th of the season on an assist from senior midfielder Liz Pacheco at the 20 minute mark. Senior midfielder Larisa Lasko scored Vassar's third goal and her seventh of the season with 48 seconds left in the game.
